Anyone who lives or owns property within the city limits of Urbana (Cunningham Township) is eligible for a free library card. To get a library card you must present your photo ID and something that verifies your current Urbana address, such as a recently postmarked piece of mail. To distinguish individuals with common names from one another, we also require that applicants provide a full birth date (month, day, year). Library cards for residents are valid for three years from the date of issue.

There are no age restrictions for library card applicants, but parents or guardians must sign for all children not yet enrolled in grade 6.


Businesses and Agencies

A business or agency that occupies a property within the city limits of Urbana may obtain a library card at The Urbana Free Library. To apply for a library card for an Urbana business or agency, please call the Director of Circulation Services at 367-4057, or you may print a copy of our Library cards for Urbana Businesses and Agencies brochure (PDF).

Library cards issued to Urbana businesses and agencies are valid for three years from the date of issue.

Non-Residents

Borrowers who do not reside within the city limits of Urbana (Cunningham Township) are required to pay a tax-substitute fee to obtain a library card. The fee covers service to all members of a household, and each household member will receive a separate card.

Non-resident tax-substitute fees are determined by calculating the library tax the borrower's property would be assessed if it were annexed to the City of Urbana, and rounding up to the next $5.00 increment. If you reside ouside the city limits of Urbana, call Circulation Services at 367-4057 for more information on fees and how to apply for a non-resident library card.

In accordance with that requires non-resident library cards be purchased at the nearest public library, The Urbana Free Library offers non-resident cards to all addresses within Urbana School District #116.

Paid non-resident library cards are issued for one year and may be paid annually or in three, four-month installments.

Non-Resident Property Owners

Library cards are available without charge to persons who pay Urbana city property taxes but do not reside within the city limits. Non-resident property owner cards are issued to persons whose individual names appear on the current tax bills and are valid for three years from the date of issue. In accordance with only one library card is issued per parcel of property.

Cards issued to non-resident property owners carry all the privileges of resident cards, including reciprocal borrowing privileges at all libraries in the Lincoln Trail Libraries System. For more information about non-resident property cards, call Circulation Services at 367-4057.

Responsibilities

Library cards are non-transferable. Each eligible borrower must apply for, carry, and use his or her own library card.

Failure to receive a courtesy or overdue notice does not constitute cause for removal or reduction of fees.

All cardholders are responsible for all use of their card and reporting any change of address. If you lose your library card, please contact Circulation Services at 367-4057.
