This fall, past times turn to intrigue
as the library’s UFL Reads book club
for adults investigates historical
mysteries.
On Sunday, September 28, we
will follow the trail of clues in
Laurie R. King’s The Beekeeper’s
Apprentice. Young American
orphan Mary Russell becomes
acquainted with Sherlock Holmes,
now retired and raising bees in
Sussex Downs. Will the chance
encounter of this unlikely duo
develop into a talented team of
sleuths when an unsolved mystery
unfolds?
Future UFL Reads titles:
October 26:
Murder in the White House by Margaret Truman
November 23:
Murphy’s Law by Rhys Bowen
UFL Reads meets from 2:00-3:00
p.m. the fourth Sunday of most
months in the MacFarlane-Hood
Reading Room on the main level
of the library.
Here is your opportunity to chat with your favorite
authors at your library! On Saturday, October 4, 2008,
the library will welcome three nationally acclaimed
authors as part of the Youth Literature Festival,
sponsored by the College of Education, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
10:00 a.m. - Coretta Scott King Book Award winner Ashley Bryan will describe
the process he uses to create the intricate and colorful paper-cut illustrations
in such titles as My America and Sing to the Sun. His vibrant performance
will focus on African American poetry, storytelling, and music.
1:00 p.m. - We’ll welcome Jennifer Holm, author of the very popular
Babymouse graphic novels and Newbery Honor Book Our Only May Amelia.
She’ll tell us how she has been influenced by reading, especially through the
comic books and cartoon strips she devoured as a child.
3:00 p.m. - Chris Crutcher is a novelist and was the recipient of the Margaret A.
Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in young adult literature. In his dynamic
presentation, he will share how his experiences as a therapist have been the
source of many of his compelling stories in books such as Whale Talk.
Come join us in the Lewis Auditorium on the ground floor of the library for
this author-studded event! Each presentation will be followed by an autograph
session. For more information about the Youth Literature Festival, including
