AsiaLens Film Series presents Wings of Defeat
Thursday, December 8 • 7:00 - 8:45 p.m.
Lewis Auditorium • Ground Floor
After she learned about her uncle’s secret past as a surviving Kamikaze pilot, Japanese American director Risa Morimoto was inspired to interview former Kamikaze pilots. Now in their 80s, the pilots thoughtfully recall and share their fears, their ambivalence, their patriotism, and their guilt as survivors, when thousands of their comrades perished during Japan’s most desperate hour at the end of World War II. Wings of Defeat is a moving, human re-examination of the Kamikaze legacy from the perspectives of those who trained for, flew, and survived as suicide missions, as well as those Americans who survived such attacks.
AsiaLENS is a series of free public film screenings and lecture / discussion programs on issues reflecting contemporary life in Asia. The series is co-sponsored by the Spurlock Museum and organized by the Asian Educational Media Service, a program of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Bhutan: Taking the Middle Path to Happiness
Tuesday, October 11 • 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. • Lewis Auditorium
Film and Discussion
Imagine a place where the happiness of the people is the guiding principle of government. Imagine a people who see all life as sacred, a land with abundant renewable energy, and a nation committed to preserving nature and its culture. Imagine a country where the government’s goal is “Gross National Happiness.” Where is this Shangri-La? Bhutan. But can this small, geographically isolated country tucked away in the Himalayan Mountains truly protect its environment and culture as they open their doors to the West?
Bhutan – Taking the Middle Path to Happiness is an Emmy Award-winning documentary on the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and its development policy of “Gross National Happiness.”
A discussion led by Alexander L. Mayer (Associate Professor, East Asian Languages and Cultures and Religious Studies, University of Illinois) will immediately follow the film.
AsiaLENS is a series of free public film screenings and lecture / discussion programs on issues reflecting contemporary life in Asia. The series is organized by the Asian Educational Media Service, a program of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies and the Spurlock Museum, both at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Saturday, October 22 • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Lewis Auditorium
Allerton’s Paradises by Maureen and Michael Holtz showcases the two extraordinary estates of local philanthropist Robert Allerton. Author Maureen Holtz was raised in the Chicago suburbs and graduated from the University of Illinois with an education degree. In 2009, Holtz and Martha Burgin co-authored Robert Allerton: The Private Man and the Public Gifts. Michael Holtz grew up in nearby Clinton, Illinois, and has spent many hours since childhood exploring Allerton Park. A structural engineer, he is a self-taught photographer.
Allerton’s Paradises and Allerton: The Private Man and the Public Gifts were published by The News-Gazette and are available from local bookstores and The News-Gazette office.

Changes in the Illinois library systems…
…What will this change mean for you the user?
This year has been a time of rapid change within the Illinois library systems due to the financial challenges in the State. As of July 1, the current nine state library systems will cease to exist and will merge into two larger systems. The Lincoln Trail Libraries System will become part of the new southern system, the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS), along with Shawnee Library System, Lewis & Clark Library System, and Rolling Prairie Library System. The five existing systems in the north will merge to become Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and the Chicago Public Library System will continue as its own entity.
What will this change mean for you the user?
- • The Urbana Free Library will remain part of IHLS.
- • You should not notice any change in service delivery—it is a change in the name and organizational structure.
- • All of the library systems will remain committed to delivery and resource sharing.
- • You will start seeing the IHLS name in communication you may receive from the library and through Library ELF, such as notices for holds and overdue materials.
- • If you are a fan of eBooks and use My Media Mall, you will now select IHLS when you sign in to your account.

Join us for a tribute to Kwela bands—the upbeat street music of southern Africa that features Malawian guitar, sax jive (jazz), and pennywhistle. Cosponsored by the Urbana-Zomba Sister Cities Committee, the UIUC Center for African Studies, and the UIUC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Engagement.
Andy Miller is a Master’s student in percussion performance at U of I. He will be studying in Columbia this fall through the support of a Fulbright grant.
Wongani Katundu holds an MA in ethnomusicology from Indiana University, and is a specialist on the history of Malawian guitar styles, Malawian traditional music, and music education in Malawi. Wongani has worked extensively with Malawi’s first recording artist, the legendary “Black” Paseli, and has himself played in Oslo and Helsinki.
Rick Deja is a PhD student in ethnomusicology at U of I. He has been researching popular music and the recording industry in Malawi and the southern African region. Rick has worked as a performer, audio engineer, and producer in Malawi.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
The time—the later stages of World War II. The place—a tiny island in the Mediterranean. The crew—the 256th Bomber Squadron. Caught in the midst of increasing quotas for bombing missions and the resulting deaths, Captain Yossarian hopes to opt out by pleading insanity. The doctor’s diagnosis? Anyone “would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to, he was sane and had to.” Thus the dilemma—Catch-22.

American Classics We Missed
Sunday, March 27 • 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
MacFarlane-Hood Reading Room
Embarrassed that you never read that socially important book? Join other readers in the same boat—and some enthusiastic re-readers—and finally indulge in that iconic American title.
Join us when UFL Reads! discusses The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
Discover the world of J.D. Salinger’s alienated and angst-ridden teen Holden Caulfield. We see through Holden’s eyes as he journeys from his former prep school to New York. Through a variety of stream-of- consciousness adventures and interactions with folks and friends in the City, Holden tells us what it’s like to be a rebellious teen in the 1950s. The Catcher in the Rye is a controversial book, as it is a frank, uncensored look at Holden’s life. But it also makes us think about larger issues of identity and belonging. From a notorious beginning to an American classic, is this a work that speaks to teens, to adults, or to all ages?

In Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford returns to her hometown in Florida, under much scrutiny from former friends and acquaintances who wonder what she’s been up to. With her friend Pheoby as a sounding board, Janie recounts her life as an African American woman in the 1930s. Janie’s survived three husbands and stressful times. Late Fee Increase on Print and Audio Items at
The Urbana Free Library Effective March 1
- DVDs, videos, CD-ROMs, exploration/learning kits - 50¢ per day per item (no change)
- All other items in Adult Services - 20¢ per day per item (from 10¢)
- All other items in Children’s Services - 10¢ per day per item (from 5¢)
Late fees are based on the date an item is returned, not the date the item was checked out. Consequently, overdue items returned on or after March 1 will be charged the new late fees regardless of when they were checked out.
Late fees are based on the date an item is returned, not the date the item was checked out. Consequently, overdue items returned on or after March 1 will be charged the new late fees regardless of when they were checked out.
For example: an Adult book or audio item that is due on February 20
IF returned on February 28
= 8 days overdue @ 10¢ per day late fee
= 80¢ total late charge
IF returned on March 1
= 9 days overdue @ 20¢ per day late fee
= $1.80 total late charge
Late fees primarily serve as an incentive to return library materials so they are available for other borrowers. Although late fees are not a significant revenue source, any non-tax revenues do lessen the property tax burden. The library has seen sharp decreases in interest income, the withdrawal of University of Illinois impact aid, and slight losses from county and state grants.
Some people consider their late fees as their extra support of the library, appreciative of the many items they can borrow freely. If you are concerned about late fees, consider these tips:
- Watch the due dates stamped on each item.
- Request a printed list of items at check out.
- Renew items to extend their due dates or to minimize the fees on items already overdue. Call 367-4057 to renew by phone. (Note that some items may not be renewable.)
- Sign up for email notices with a pre-overdue reminder.
- Sign up for Library ELF (libraryelf.com) and choose your own email notice schedule—even daily reminders and a combined notice for all family accounts.
- Access your online account (urbanafreelibrary.org) to see your due dates and to renew items.
We last increased late fees in 1993, when adult items changed from 5¢ to 10¢ and children’s items from 2¢ to 5¢. At that time, late fees on all videos were $1.00 per day and adult audio items were 25¢ per day. Video and audio items were subsequently decreased.

A Selection and Display of Chinese Scholar’s
Study Room Treasures
As part of the library’s Chinese New Year celebration activities, we are fortunate to have on exhibit a selection of treasures often found in a Chinese scholar’s studio or study room—objects used for traditional Chinese writing and painting.
For thousands of years, Chinese scholars, greatly esteemed by their society, were also practitioners of highly sophisticated arts, such as calligraphy, painting, seal engraving, and music. In conjunction with poetry writing and reading, the scholars often became collectors of high-quality art and literati objects. Most objects were functional and used as tools for their studies, such as brushes, ink stones, and brush holders. Other objects—paintings, figurines, and scholar’s rocks, were inspirational and used as decoration, for contemplation, and for art appreciation.
Located in the library’s exhibit case on the main floor, the Chinese Scholar’s Study Room Treasures will be on display through February 28. The exhibit is guest curated by Dr. Yu (Ian) Wang, the President of the CAACI (Chinese American Association of Central Illinois) and the curator of the Spurlock Museum of the University of Illinois.
Also in the exhibit case is a collection of Chinese/English bilingual children’s materials. Recently added to the library’s collection, the bilingual materials have been made available thanks to a generous donation from the CAACI through proceeds from the Yahsin Chen Art Exhibition.
